Your wood floor’s maintenance can be tricky depending on what type of home you live in. Some folks around the Delaware Valley live in very old homes that do breathe well and are able to organically maintain appropriate humidity for healthy wood floors. Conversely, as a backlash to the energy crisis of the 1970s, others of us live in air tight homes that tend to get very dry and cause wood floors to crack. Still yet others of us do extra damage to our floors when we have our air conditioning going hard and then we all of a sudden leave our home, shut off the AC and allow our floors to expand like mad! We call this the Vacation Home effect. The bottom line is all of our floors need a different type or different level of care.
One quick tip for an easy to make hardwood floor cleaner is to mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 1 gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to lightly spray your floor. Wipe immediately with a clean cloth. Just remember to never pour water directly onto the floor or allow water to pool or soak.
