What’s Involved in the Hardwood Floor Refinishing Process?
Workers will have to sand the floors to get rid of any scratches, gouges, and other forms of damage and reveal a fresh layer of wood. If necessary, they will remove carpet that’s on top of the hardwood and replace damaged boards before sanding. Those tasks can add to the overall timeframe for the project.
Once the floors have been sanded, contractors will have to apply a protective polyurethane finish. The type of finish you select will impact the length of the project.
If you choose an oil-based polyurethane, the floors will most likely need three coats. It generally takes a day for each coat to dry before workers can apply the next coat.
If you decide to go with a water-based polyurethane, the project will be finished sooner, probably within two days. If you’re on a tight schedule, using a water-based polyurethane may be a better option.
An oil-based polyurethane will last longer than a water-based finish. If you can afford the extra time, it will be worth it.
If you also want workers to stain your hardwood floors, the stain will take at least 24 hours to dry. For some species of wood, two coats of stain may be necessary. If the weather is humid, expect it to take longer for each coat to dry.
