If your hardwood floors are scratched or discolored, refinishing can make them look like new. You can rent a sander and purchase other supplies at a home improvement store, and you can watch videos online demonstrating how to do it. You may be tempted to go that route to save money, but DIY hardwood refinishing is generally NOT a good idea. Here’s why!

Refinishing Hardwood Floors Is Harder Than You May Think

Many homeowners who do some online research conclude that refinishing hardwood floors is a fairly simple project that they can handle themselves. They’re often shocked by how difficult it is to use the equipment, how physically exhausting the process can be, how messy the house can become, how easy it is to make mistakes, and how hard or impossible it is to correct those mistakes.

Using a sander is physically challenging. If you’re not used to it, you may find the machine difficult to handle, and you may be achy and sore after a short amount of time. It’s also hard to sand a hardwood floor and get it nice and smooth. Professionals can do it because they have years of experience and use machines that are of better quality than ones available for rental at home improvement centers.

If you rent a sander and do the project yourself, the floor will likely come out uneven, and it will be difficult, if not impossible, to fix it without the help of a professional. If you make a mistake when sanding or staining the floor, the stain won’t go on evenly, and there will be patches that look blotchy.

In the end, refinishing hardwood floors yourself won’t save you much money. It may wind up costing you more if you make a mistake that you can’t repair yourself and have to hire a flooring professional to fix it.
